German Wide Chopping Hoe, 2.4 lb Head, 9" Blade with 43" Ash Handle

This is the wide, heavy draw hoe for jobs where an ordinary garden hoe feels too light. Its 9-inch blade covers ground quickly, while the substantial forged head carries enough momentum to break compacted or clay-rich soil, sever roots, and move a useful amount of earth with each stroke. It is particularly well suited to opening or renovating beds, clearing rough ground, shaping soil, and maintaining ditches, banks, and path edges. Because of its width, it is best used in open areas rather than for close cultivation between established plants.

SHW calls this pattern a "Banketthacke". Despite the similar spelling, the German name has nothing to do with a dining banquet. A "Bankett" is the shoulder or verge beside a road, where broad, durable hoes of this type were traditionally used to cut vegetation and reshape soil. That working origin explains the unusually wide and sturdy blade.

The head is forged in Germany from special steel and fitted to a long 43-inch European ash handle (also available with a 53" handle here). A secure wedge connection keeps the head firmly seated. The tapered, ground cutting edge is designed to maintain an effective working edge as it wears, while the replaceable handle allows the tool to be repaired and kept in service for many years.
